Sony has shipped over 117M PlayStation 4 systems, per final tally

The final total of PlayStation 4 console shipments worldwide is now at about 117.2 million as of March this year. Since then, Sony has stopped reporting the number of PS4 console shipments. Shipment numbers are different than the number of consoles actually sold, so there may be a discrepancy between the two. Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad notes that there are only several other video game consoles that have met or surpassed the monumental success of the PlayStation 4. They include the Game Boy and Game Boy Color at a combined 118.7 million units, the Nintendo DS at 154 million units, and Sony’s own PlayStation 2 at 155 million units. The Nintendo Switch has been a big success as well as it’s currently tracking at 111 million units sold. It will most likely eclipse the PS4’s lifetime figures soon, and certainly before Nintendo announces some sort of successor. Sony is no longer reporting PS4 shipments which means the final total for the console is ~117.2 million as of March 2022.

By contrast, Microsoft stopped reporting console shipment and sales numbers for the Xbox One in 2015. The last reported estimate for Xbox One sales was around 50 million units, and the PS4 presumably outsold its main competitor at a rate of 2:1. Of course, the focus is now on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The former is currently sitting at around 20 million units sold worldwide, while the latter is trailing slightly behind at around 15 million. Consoles have been hard to come by recently due to the global semiconductor shortage. Sony even reportedly tackled the issue earlier this year by creating more PS4 consoles than PS5 ones, as they require less advanced chips and can be viewed as a budget-friendly alternative. There’s a lot to say about Borderlands 4’s opening hours, but the game’s first proper raid and boss act as a microcosm for the entire experience. I played the first several hours leading up to this climactic mission, engaging in various side missions, activities, and world events, but I still have dozens more to go. However, it wasn’t until I played this setpiece mission that all of Borderlands 4’s systems came together in a short but sweet symphony of a mission that proudly proclaimed that the series is back and better than ever. It wasn’t that I wasn’t having fun before this mission, only that it gave me a taste of what the best of this style of game can be and awakened a craving for more. What’s more, I can’t wait to experience them again with friends. Sonic is back with another cart racer that is crossing over with all of Sega’s major IPs, but the big question is whether or not the game will bring players on different platforms together. Unlike Sonic Racing: Crossworlds’ biggest competition, Mario Kart World, this is not a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive but will be released on all current and last-gen systems. That means, unlike Mario, Sonic has the opportunity to take the lead by allowing cross-platform play between all consoles and PC. With a name like Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, one would hope that it would embrace crossplay and bring all players together, just like Gears of War: Reloaded and Borderlands 4. I know you gotta go fast, but let’s hit the brakes for a second and talk about Sonic Racing: Crossworlds cross-platform support. Does Sonic Racing: Crossworlds have cross-platform support? HDR10+ Technologies is officially revealing two upcoming games that will take advantage of its revolutionary HDR10+ GAMING technology. Those two titles include Borderlands 4 and Hell is Us, which join a host of already released Blockbuster games that have already adopted this emerging standard for gaming visuals. The only catch is that, for now, this feature is only available for PC players. Most gamers are probably aware of what HDR is, but HDR10+ GAMING is likely a new term. HDR itself gained traction in gaming last generation, and if you have a TV or monitor that supports it, then you likely have encountered dozens of calibration screens while playing games where you attempt to adjust the lighting for the best picture. HDR10+ GAMING aims to remove all that guesswork and fiddling by automatically adjusting your settings for whatever game you’re playing. For now, this new tech is only available on PCs utilizing either Nvidia or Intel GPUs.
